I saw my brother Tom Rhodes having all this fun with his @rndfantasy project and I had to join in. This is the final drawing for this weeks winner @Tay_McD. Her character Clara Leone is a young wood elf, a self-exiled noble’s daughter and skilled huntress. The commentary video will be coming soon, but until then here’s the progress video:

I’m stepping in as guest-artist on my brother Tom Rhodes’ youtube channel this week (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ0Ma2-wquvZMpN6iWOV30A) where I’ll be drawing the winner’s roleplaying character. If you’re on twitter, tweet #RNDFANTASY09 to join the lottery before the end of the day.

HUMPHRIES & DEL MUNDO TRAVERSE THE TWISTING, MYSTICAL ROADS OF “WEIRDWORLD

  • Weirdworld #1 and #2 covers by Mike Del Mundo
  • Weirdworld #1 variant by  Matt Rhodes
  • Weirdworld #2 variant by Afu Chan
  • Concepts for Becca and Goleta by Mike Del Mundo

Goleta - she’s a seven-foot-tall barbarian woman. She’s been a blast to create and a blast to write. Her design by Mike Del Mundo is crazy. When you see her you’ll immediate fall in love with her. She’s someone who is loud and brash and is completely at home in the wilds of Weirdworld. She hunts wizards.; she despises wizards. That’s her jam.
She has a gigantic blade in the shape of a G, and she drives a souped up Weirdworld infused muscle car, both designed by Maniac Mike Del Mundo.

Becca - She is a normal teenage girl; as normal as you can be for someone who is thrown into a crazy sci-fi, fantasy world. Other than that she’s mostly normal. She actually does stand apart from most teenagers in that she is burdened with her own personal quest. Then she literally crash lands on Weirdworld, and everything gets complicated a thousand-fold. Because now she has to survive this crazy mixed up world, complete her quest, and get home. She is an American teen from the Marvel Universe. So as an aware citizen she certainly knows about super heroes. She knows who Spider-Man is. She knows who the Avengers are. She knows that in the world there are crazy things that do not lend themselves to easy explanations. But now she is going to come face to face with the heart of extreme weirdness of the Marvel Universe, with nothing but her phone to defend her!

geek-tragedy asked:

Hey! What advice would you give to a 15 year old looking to be a Concept Artist as a future career?

I typically answer messages privately, but I’m going to post this one publicly because it’s indicative of over half the messages I receive. In no particular order:

1) Sacrifice that one thing that’s stealing your drawing time. I can’t tell you what it is, but you probably thought of it as soon as you read that last sentence. You have thousands of bad drawings to flush out of your system, don’t let that thing slow you down.

2) Draw things that challenge you. Don’t get stuck drawing the same comfy things over and over. Draw the stuff you know you keep avoiding.

3) Finish stuff. You develop discipline when you actually take an image to completion, or finish a short comic, or get through a long round of studies.

4) Find a community (no matter how big or small) that fosters and encourages critique. Don’t just put your work up and wait for the “cool!” comments. Explain to other people what you were trying to accomplish, and let them tell you how you failed. Then, bandage up your ego and repeat. Forever.

5) Learn everything you can. Read fiction and non-fiction. Learn about storytelling and anthropology and history and mathematics and mythology and art. Watch documentaries about subjects that fascinate you and even more about subjects you’re not interested in. Go for hikes, draw architecture, paint your friends, get a library card and use it so much you have to get a replacement. Turn your mind into a net and try to snare as much of the world as you can, then show us what you saw.

Dune (Re-posted with some color)

I gave in to the siren song of Dune and was dashed upon the rocks like so many concept artists before me. There just isn’t time to render these, but I’m reasonably pleased with the line-work, so here they are!

Some context: I fell into a Dune-hole recently which started by stumbling across the INCREDIBLE art from what would have been Jodorowsky’s Dune film. That inspired me to re-watch the David Lynch movie again (one of my favorites). At that point, I had to read the book again. In the middle of my read-through, I watched a couple Tarsem Singh movies and my brain made a connection that I couldn’t shake loose:

I want a 4 hour Dune movie designed by Tarsem Singh’s crew (production designer, art director, costume designer, cinematographer, etc…)

So, in order to get that thought out of my brain, I took a clumsy swing at designing the cast of Dune through the lens of Tarsem Singh’s crew. To me, that meant making each character an operatic or theatrical expression of their role in the story. Visual storytelling cranked to eleven.

Inquisition was the best project I’ve ever worked on by a large margin and drawing these epilogue slides felt like the best possible send off for me. Out of the 43 that I drew, these were a few of my favorites.

It was a great chance to break free of technical limitations (cloaks, hair, etc…) and to explore what directions they may head. As wonderful as “iconic” looks are, I like to break characters of their set appearances when possible. Every costume in the game required drawings, sculpting, rigging. That cost means we usually don’t get a lot of wardrobe changes for characters. The epilogue slides were also a good chance to explore what else these characters may wear. Maybe they let their hair down (Josephine), or they have a favorite coat they never wore because they spent the game in armor (Cullen), or they have culturally specific clothing they can bring out (Cassandra’s formal Nevarran dragon dress and hair braid).

World of Thedas Volume 2

The second lore book is out, and it’s kind of ridiculous. It’s heavy, stacked to the gills with lore, stories, recipes, songs, and juicy gossip. It also includes some never-before-seen concept art, as well as a large amount of new content we made specifically for this book. I honestly can’t even believe we made this thing.

Here are a few of the original pieces I was fortunate enough to contribute to this ludicrous tome, in order:

Darinius, first Archon of Tevinter

Garahel and Isseya

Garahel slays the Archdemon

Some of the cast of Dragon Age: Origins

Illustration for Mir Da'len Somniar, a traditional Dalish lullaby

Also, be sure to check out Nick Thornborrow’s post about this as well. Not only did he curate the art for this book, he also created a ton of original content for it.

For those who are interested in picking it up:

you can pick up the hardcover on Amazon

Or pick up the special edition on the Bioware store.
